Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is also called basil herb or royal herb. Basil is a spice plant and belongs to the labiates family. Basil is an essential ingredient in Italian cuisine, as this healthy herb enhances every dish. However, green basil does not originally come from Italy, but from India. Even the Egyptians already cultivated the valuable plant, because residues of basil were discovered in pyramids. However, the aromatic plant only came to Germany in the 12th century AD.
